My dwarf hamster is very weak..

Question
Dear Jess,

My dwarf hamster, Bibi, appears to be very weak for 2 days. She breathes very heavily, and looks tired all the time..She has blood around her private area. She sometimes acts like she is cleaning her face/ getting food out from her pouch but in a much slower motion. She sometimes makes some weird clicking noises too..

I read the illness guide but cant figure out what is going on...We even took her to the vet last night but they didnt seem to know what was wrong with her ...

I am just wondering what I could do...I feel so bad...

By the way, she is already 2 year old and was diabetic at a younger age..

Thank you very much..

Answer
Hi there, it does sound like she has a few things going on, she could have a respiratory problem which would be why she makes clicking noises. The bleeding from her genitals indicates a womb infection that would normally mean the womb should be removed though she does not sound fit for surgery. I think she will need some antibiotics if she is going to stand a chance of fighting these infections. Some womb infections do clear up with antibiotics and at her age i think it would do no harm to try. You will need to see your vet again for that. In the mean time keep her warm, feed her lots of nice foods and keep her hydrated. Have you tested her urine lately to make sure her diabetes hasnt returned? I really hope she pulls through. Let me know how she gets on
