QuestionHi my house cat caught & was throwing & batting around a baby field mouse (has fur, eyes open, body length = 2-3 inches). I got mouse away from cat. Mouse is alive, i don't see blood or open wounds; it's breathing shallowly & rapidly, but does not appear to be moving much at all. What should i do to reasonably help it have a chance to recover (from perhaps just shock, but perhaps has more serious injuries, such as broken limbs, etc.) or help it painlessly on to the other side? Can I just call a vet or animal shelter?
AnswerHi!
If the mouse seems to be moving alright after the initial shock, you can release him to the wild in a peaceful area.
However if he doesn't seem to be moving/has trouble running there's not a whole lot one can do. Treating a wild mouse for a broken bone is next to impossible, and the stress caused to the poor guy from the procedure is not, in my opinion, worth it on anyone's part. In such case I would recommend assisting him to the other side as painlessly as possible.
Fingers crossed for him over here, hope it was merely a shock he experienced. :-)
