My Degu isnt doing so well

Question
My female degu, Rayna, is about 5 years old. She has a bald spot along the side of her face. She also seems unable to support herself as all she can manage is lying on her side. She can, however, scoot across on her side. She's thin, and won't eat. I've offered her several different treats that she'd normally jump for. Her breathing is rapid and she is generally unresponsive. I'm afraid to pick her up and move her in case I worsen her condition. I realize the best thing is to go to a vet, but all the ones around here aren't open today, and the emergency vet is almost an hour away and extrememly expensive. I also don't want to risk the long car ride.
I'm looking for what might be wrong with her, how I can treat her at home until Monday when the vet opens again, or, if all else fails, how I can ease her suffering until she passes.

She is also twitching her legs very often. Her eyes are shut and she won't open them, despite being awake.

Answer
When you are in this situation and having to wait there are a few things that you can do, however, it sounds like she is going to pass away. What you can do to make it better for you and her is:

1)Keep her warm with a small blanket, heating pad on low, or anything you can wrap her in.

2)Talk to her. Degu's are like any other pet and can hear their owners voice and just like before can be calmed by a simple song, conversation, ect.

3)Keep it quiet when you are not with her. Alone in a room, dark, and warm make it more comfortable.

4)Keep water by even if she isnt using it. You can always use an infant dropper if you like to give it to her.

5)There is no harm in picking her up to hold her in your arms, Degu's have great pain thresholds and are great at hiding pain and illness. With it being near the end it is always nice to think the last thing she will remember will be your smell and voice.

I am sorry for you lose and best of wishes.
