Question
Hello, my name is Karl and I have two male winter white hamsters and I was wondering if I could house them together(they didn't come from the same litter and they are both adults). If they can; how will i introduce them together etc. And finally what is the minimum cage size for two hamsters?

Answer
Dear Karl,
thank you for your question.
Dwarf hamsters are social in the wild, but they live as pairs or family groups with one adult pair and their offspring in huge territories. In captivity, even breeding pairs and siblings often fight sooner or later. hamsters of the same sex that have not lived together since birth are almost impossible to introduce to each other and I really advice against trying. The risk of ending up with one or two seriously hurt hamsters is just too high.
The minimum size for a single hamster is a cage 30x15x15 inches long, wide and high, I would recommend 40x20x20" for a pair, with plenty of hiding places, two wheels, several food dishes (unless you just scatter the food) to avoid fights for anything.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer
