leaves ok for digging?

Hi,
We are new to owning gerbils and I know they like to dig? Are crushed maple leaves suitable for digging in? We were thinking of having a separate box of leaves they could play in from time to time. We have lots of leaves for free...thanks!

I cant see why not. I would just make sure there is no bugs in them. You can also use shredded paper(jun mail),grass(which they like to eat, and even cat litter. Just remember to watch for critters . Thank you for using all experts and please feel free to ask more questions :)
