mice as pets

Question
My daughter just got two small mice as pets for her birthday. She has one black one and one albino one. Upon seeing these "pets" her older brother stated that the albino feeder mice are agressive because they were bread to die. (Sounds a little like bull to me) Now she wants to take the white one back to the pet store (I doubt that we can even do that). They are really cute, and I see no difference yet in the behavior of one over the other. Is there? Also, we believe that by chance we got a male and a female (the albino is a male). If they procreate, is it true that the male will eat the babies? We have only had these critters a few hours and we have been given so much advice. Is any of it true?

Answer
Feeder mice can make fine pets...I've had them myself numerous times.   A lot depends on how you raise them.  If they are handled gently and regularly, they will be gentle and tame.  If you are nervous, loud, rough, or cruel to them they will not want to be held or may even bite just like any other small animal.  If you got a male and a female, you may have an issue.  Not only do the males not do well with the babies (so I hear, never had to deal with that) you will have them about every 30 days or so.  They are very prolific.  If you have a male, he should have external testes by now (I don't know how old they are so can't say for sure) so it will be best to identify them soon and separate if need be.  Don't worry about the aggressiveness-- mice are very nice pets, and most of mine have been albino.
Good luck,
Carol
