found newborn rodent?

We found a newborn rodent (I think), it was about 2 1/2 inches long, eyes were still closed tight, it had long nails, and a 2" long tail.  The tail looked like a mouse tail, but I've seen baby mice, they are so much smaller than this was and their tails weren't as long either. We're trying to figure out what kind of animal it was.  There was another one by it, but it was half eaten :-(  I put this little guy out of its misery, it didn't stand a chance, so sad.  Any information on what it possibly was?  I've had newborn rabbits, at first that what it looked like, but then we saw the tail and the little claws.  Thank you for any help, Brenda

There is no way to tell for sure without photos, but while there are many varieties of mice it could be (they don't all look alike) my first guess is a rat.  It could also be other things...not knowing where it was found makes it a little tougher.  Having what info you've given, the highest probability is one of the many varieties of rats.
