degus eating less and less

Question
My room mate has had these two boy degus for a year or so now and onen of them named leo had a cloudy eye... but it ended up going away.  Now we have to give them seperate food containers to eat because they used to fight over it and we were afraid of them injuring eachother... and always ate everything.  half full for each one... now they have stopped eating as much.  They both seemed to have lost some weight but really show no other problems... what can I do?

Answer
Are you handling them much?  They are very social creatures, and need lots of attention.  By having separate food dishes, they may feel as though they are being distanced by the colony (each other and the humans in their lives)and eating is a social event.  Make sure you are hand feeding them treats such as carrot chips, plain cheerios,an occasional nut, or you can even pull the colored food pieces out of their staple food (if the brand you buy has it in there) and feed that to them by hand--it is the sharing of a special kind of food a special way.  That will help them both weight-wise, and socially.

Good luck!
