Question
just yesterday my female chinchilla had a kit.. ididnt even know she was pregnant...anyways when when i noticed the kit it was still wet so i know i just seen it right after birth i also noticed that it has a baald spot on its back it this normal for a new born kit... it seems to be a very dry spot should i be concerned? thx

Answer
A chinchilla kits should be dry within just an hour after birth. It may have a bald spot due to rubbing as the mother pushed during birth. It should not be red or look inflamed and if you spot no hair growth by the 4 week of life then the kit will need to see a vet to make sure there is no fungus issues with the skin. A lot of chinchillas have certain spots of hair missing because of rubbing or constant movement in a certain way, with a kit it would be movement back and forth in the birthing canal that may cause this to happen. For now it should be observed and if any changes such a flaking, redness, or sore occurs then be seen by a vet fur a skin culture.
