Question
I have had two boy degus for 6 months now, but I was hoping to get a girl, but I don't want to get one and have them not accept her, but if they do accept her I don't want them fighting over her and I don't know how to breed and I don't know where to find another degu. I live in Pullman and I want to know if there are any pet stores near by that would have them or else at a sheltor. Piease email me asap I really need to know, thanks.

Answer
First, I have no clue where Pullman might be, so I can't help you find one near you.  Secondly you DO NOT want to get a female if you have a pair of males.  The males will fight to the death.  It's not even an issue of you getting a female for each male...if there is more than one male in a mating colony (meaning with one or more females) your animals will be seriously injured.  Both males may die and then you're left with just your female.  It isn't an issue of them not accepting the female--too much testosterone in one cage is major trouble.  Only one male around any amount of females.  The next issue you would face if you begin to start breeding, you have to know you'll be able to find homes for all of them.  If you find females near you, you have to make sure they are not related to the males you have, or else you will have in-breeding and thus sick animals.  Breeding degus isn't something you just stumble into.  You need to know what to do if one is having a hard time delivering a baby, what vets in your area will care for them, and how to properly socialize them for pet quality animals.  Please research further and see if this is something you should even be considering.
