Degus Health Problem

Question
I have 2 rescue degus.  One has had a very bad cold and been treated with Baytril and latterly Aureomycin and seems to be recovering however a further problem has developed.  He has put on a vast amount of weight and is probably twice the width of his brother.  He is not drinking more than usual so I think it's not diabetes and certainly he hasn't had any sugar whilst in our care (about a year).  He seems very squigy almost seems filled with fluid - do you have any ideas?

Answer
Greetings!
I have not heard about water retention in degus,or anything like what you have described.  That doesn't mean it's not real, I just am clueless.  If you don't give him salty snacks, then there is always the possibility that he is retaining fluid from kidney failure...but there again, the vet would need to determine that.  I'm sorry, but have no other ideas...perhaps your vet might.

I hope all is figured out soon, and there is a way to take care of it simply.  Thanks for caring!
