overweight and picky winter white

Question
How do you tell if a dwarf winter white is overweight? He was born some time in September of this year. He is a picky eater, and will dig through his food, only eating seeds, nuts, and occasionally a piece of corn.  How can I stop him from being such a picky eater? I have tried reducing his portions a little bit and not putting as much of the foods he goes for or just taking them all out of his food dish. That doesn't work. He will only eat small seeds when I take out the sunflower seeds and the nuts (if there are any nuts). What should I do?

Answer
Thank you for using allexperts. I am sorry that I took too long to answer your question. My hamsters are the same. They dont eat the seeds or the basic pellets. This is normal each pick through the food and only eat certain things. I have 5 and many more before that. It is like humans you eat what you like. What you can do is give him fresh veggies and fruits. Make sure that he has a wheel to exercise on and just let him enjoy being a hamster. They only live 2-3 years so let him enjoy it. You only have to worry if he cant walk.

Hope that this helps.
