Scratch becomes open wound

Question

Nicky as baby
I rescured a baby mouse a couple of years ago and have been keeping her in a 10 gallon aquarium.  She is 18 months old and has been healthy up until now.  A couple of weeks ago I noticed a small what looked like scratch on her shoulder and wondered how she got it.  It was swollen at first and now the hair around it has come off and it has gotten bigger.  She doesn't seem to be in pain although she hasn't been running in her wheel as much as before and seems a little more reclusive.  Do you know anythng I can do to help make it heal.  I have been including orange in her diet to give her some vitamin c.
Thanks,

Dear Enid,

The first thing that comes to mind when a mouse has fur loss or unexplained wounds is mites.  This is pretty common.  However, if the wound is infected, the mouse would also need a course of antibiotics.  Again, the vet is your very best bet, especially if we are looking at both mites and a wound.  If a vet visit isn't a possibility, it is possible to treat a mouse for infection at home too.  The following post addresses both issues, though the mouse in question had the two issues separately rather than a wound:

I wish your mouse the best!
