pregnant mouse...in labour?

Question

we have 2 pet mice we bought from a pet shop 2 weeks ago now, both were said to be 4 weeks old. from the day we brought one of them home we noticed her getting fatter, less agile and losing her balance. she doesnt interact with me and my partner as well as the other one and dislikes being handled. wherever we put her she makes a nest and sleeps more andmore lately. after just picking her up to put her to bed we heard what sounded like a computer fan and clicking noises coming from her as she was trying to breathe. she had been sleeping with the other mouse who will not leave her side. has she gone into labour? is there another reason for this to happen to her?
thankyou, concerned mum and dad

Answer
Dear Katie,

She is probably pregnant. If so, and she is growing, she was over 6 weeks old when you got her. This would explain less movement, of course size/shape, grouchiness, sleeping and nesting. A pregnant mouse looks a little like it swallowed a pear.

The noise is separate, and may not be a good thing. She could have a respiratory infection. Less likely, she could also be allergic to her bedding. The best thing to do is to bring her to a vet. Especially because she is pregnant and will be nursing, I don't want to just say put her on the antibiotic I usually recommend that you can get at a pet store. The vet will know better than I do what antibiotics will be safer for the babies.

She should get to the vet before giving birth, so as soon as possible. Bring her and her friend in their normal cage if you can. You don't want to do it after the babies are born because if she gets upset she may eat the babies.

Mice can mate at 4 1/2 weeks, so you will have to separate the babies at 4 weeks. Search my archives for lots of information about raising mice and sexing them.

Of course feel free to write back if you have any more questions.
