Question

Chiko
I recently saved a baby wild mouse that had it's eyes closed. They're open now and seems perfectly healthy unfortunetly he has become tame and I don't have the heart to release him. My question is what breed could he be? I've read on here about a virus that deer mice carry and I don't want to keep him if he is going to endanger my family. I've tried looking online but I really cannot tell the difference. I live in North Carolina and where I live we do not have a exotic vet near by. In fact I think the nearest one is about 6 hours away. His tail is about 3/4 his body length so I don't think he's a jumping mouse. Please let me know ASAP. Thank you.

Answer
Dear Victoria,
thank you for your question.
He does look like a deer mouse, maybe Peromyscus maniculatus, they are very common.
They can carry a variety of disease, you are probably thinking about the Hantavirus: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hanta/hps/noframes/phys/technicalinfoindex.ht...
The problem is that as long as he is tame, he won't have muchof a chance in the wild.

The best thing you can do for him is to handle him as little as possible, keep him in a cage that's as big and as similar to his native habitat as possible and then release him when he has gotten shy, even hand-reared mice usually turn shy after a while. Definitely wear gloves and a mask when you are handling him and in particular when you clean the cage (although when it's big enough, it doesn't need to be cleaned very often). I would recommend asking a physician about how to avoid potention infection because I have no medical training and you should ask someone who is better qualified about this.

You can also try to contact wildlife rehab centres, they may be able to take the mouse or at least give advice on how to release him.

I hope I was of some help to you
