Question
QUESTION: Hello again, i am suspecting my mouse pepper has mites. He has been scratching his ear alot and has small scabs, i thoroughly checked his body and theres no thinning of fur or any other scabs. Iwent to my local pet store and it has a mites and lice spray, if i use that spray should i wet it till his fur is damp? And should i make sure he doesnt clean himself after spraying? And last of all, i have to spray and clean his cage 7-10days after his first treatment?

QUESTION: Ive just treated pepper for mites, and ive followed the instructions, making sure he doesnt lick himself and that he is dry before putting him in his tank, which has been scrubbed with hot water. Ive also cleaned his toys and dumped his paper toys. He seems fine now, but hes abit jumpy.. Is that normal? I will see what happens after today and repeat the treatment again after a couple of days :)
Ill keep updating you his condition
Have a happy new year!

ANSWER: Dear Rachel,

Unfortunately, the mite spray can be painful to their skin. On the can it warns you not to get it on your own skin. In my experience he will be better about twelve hours later. If you write back, tell me if you used the rodent spray or bird spray. I have seen a pretty bad reaction to the rodent spray, worse than jumpy. Curious if even the bird spray can cause some pain.

You do have to repeat in 7-10 days.

Expect an improvement in the symptoms of mites in about three days. Don't forget to do the whole thing again including disposing of paper toys.

Good luck to Pepper. May he be mite-free.

QUESTION: Hello, pepper seems to be scratching less now after using the rodent spray. But she scratched herself some wounds, ones on the base of her tail. And im wondering if theres anything i can do, so the wound closes up?

Answer
Dear Rachel,

Thanks for getting back to me. You can use a little neosporin if you think it might be or get infected. Only a tiny bit, because Pepper will ingest some of it. You can also try a mixture of half vitamin E and half olive oil, again not too heavy, though ingestion isn't much of a problem here.  You can get vitamin E oil by buying the gel capsules and cutting one open. It's great for your own skin too.

Much luck and good health to Pepper. Remember to repeat. But try the bird spray this time, it shouldn't be as painful.
