Roaring Mouse

Question
Hello...  my father shared the following story with me, and it got me wondering.  Have you ever heard of a mouse "roaring" as a survival instinct?  I've spent much time searching the internet and can find nothing on it.
My father's story: "Last night Hook <pet cat> caught a mouse and took it to his personal torture chamber - the bathtub. I heard the commotion and looked in on 'em to see what he had. The mouse was in very good shape and was running around the tub with Hook having a lot of fun toying with it. I was astonished when the mouse suddenly reared up on its hind legs about a foot from the face of the cat and literally roared! The only way I can describe the sound is that it sounded like the scream of a mountain lion, only with very little volume. It certainly was NOT a squeak. The little thing stood challenging Hook who just stared at it. Hook seemed almost as amazed as I was. I was so impressed by the little thing that I fetched a glass and trapped it. I took it out to the shed and released it. I just couldn't let such spunk go unrewarded. Perhaps it's courage was born of desperation, but I'll never forget how it looked and the sound it made staring into the face of certain death."

Answer
Dear Jackie,

I wonder where your father lives.  There is a mouse which roars called a Grasshopper Mouse which lives in the desert in Arizona, and possibly in another similar areas as well.  This mouse is pretty amazing, as it fights and eats scorpions and tarantulas,  I have a video about this mouse called "Killer Mouse" from the National Park service.  You may be able to find it online.  The video says the mouse "hunts like a wolf and roars like a lion."

I'm glad he let the mouse go.  Every mouse deserves a chance,

Thanks for the story!

squeaks n giggles,
