Question
Lil Baby
Lil Baby
A bit of background on this mouse: I was walking to my car today when I looked down and saw a baby mouse. It was dead, and there were three or four others scattered around a parking space. I assumed that all of them were dead and was about to leave when one of them started to move. It scared me half to death, hahaha.

I picked it up and brought it home with me, since it seemed to want to live. It's currently in a shoe box on a heating pad (the shoe box is lined with a shirt). I'm fairly certain that it's a field mouse. It's eyes aren't open, and I don't think that's it's ears are either. It's about the length of my pinkie finger, barely.

I'm feeding it kitten replacement milk through an eyedropper and stimulating it with a q-tip dipped in warm water after every meal and about a half hour after. I've read [ http://www.rmca.org/Articles/orphans.htm ] and some other articles. I was just wondering if there was any other advice or tips or anything that you could tell me to improve it's chances?

Thanks!
-Elle

Answer
Dear Elle,

I think you have found a baby fancy mouse! Maybe some idiot bought a mouse to feed to a snake and when it had babies they just dumped them.

The people writing those articles are more expert than I am. If the mouse is warm, is eating its KMR, and you are rubbing its tummy, that's good.

You are feeding it every two hours I trust. Lots of rescues fail because the rescuer thinks they can get away with maybe 2 1/2 or 3 hours. Mom mouse nurses every half hour.

Does it seem dehydrated? If so, you will want to water down its formula with an electrolyte formula. This video will help you:

I am sorry I did not get to this question earlier. My internet has been out. At least it came back before the storm. If you try write back you won't get me because I am going to sign out in case we lose power.

I would appreciate being kept up to date on my Facebook: Natasha Millikan. You can ask me questions there and I will try to get to them. Tell me who you are when you friend me. Thank you.

Best of luck!
