One of my three female mice has developed some kind of illness. Around her left eye has become very infected/scabby looking. She is also scratching more than usual. Her breathing does seem a little bit faster than usual. If it helps, I recently started using a paper based kitty litter as bedding (previously used shredded newspaper). I attached a photo, hope it's OK (I could only use my iPod). What can I do to treat this?

Answer
Dear Sam,

There are many possibilities. She should go to a vet. The scratching may mean mites, and the eye problem could be an injury due to that. Or it could be an injury from some other source. On the other hand it could be another kind of eye infection, and I can't help with eye infections. If she is not feeling well, I don't want you to treat her for mites unnecessarily. On the other hand, mites can kill. That's why the vet has to examine her.

It can also be indirectly due to an allergy. Indirectly, because if it were direct I would expect both eyes to be infected. It is a good idea to change the bedding to something like aspen chips (no cedar or pine). Newspaper is not good because the ink is toxic. Also as you may have noticed, it is not effective at odor control.

Get her to a vet, and she can be treated properly. She should recover fine. Without going to the vet, it could get worse and actually kill her : ((

I hope she is Ok,

squeaks,

Natasha
