Question

Mouse in Question
Natasha,

I rescued a baby mouse from my cat this evening. It appears to just be in shock.  I have warmed it up with a heating pad and began feeding it soy milk (that's all that is accessible this time of night).

How often do I feed a mouse with a head about as big as the rest of its body (way out of proportion!)?

What amount of time do you suggest keeping a baby mouse before releasing it?

The baby can lap the soy milk quite easily.  I appreciate any help you can send my way.

Thank you,

Leah

Answer
Dear Leah,

The baby is probably about 12-13 days old and will open its eyes in a day or two.  The best thing to feed mice is KMR (kitten milk replacement).

Keep the mouse at least until it is happily eating seeds and doesn't need the KMR.  It isn't going to be terribly competent as an outdoor mouse because there are things mamma mouse is supposed to teach it. It will be a good pet if you keep it and continue to hold it.  If you are going to release it, handle it as little as possible.  Even normal wild mice are mostly eaten before adulthood; your hand-fed baby has very little chance of living long.  However, it may be worth the feeling of freedom.

Here is a blueprint for a wild mouse release shelter which you can use to acclimate a mouse to the outdoors without just dumping it.

Thank you for rescuing it.
