introducing foundling mice to water

Question
Hello, I've been raising a litter of baby orphan mice for the last week, and they've made it to the weaning stage, as they have just started opening their eyes and pottying on their own,and trying solid food. My question is, how do I introduce them to drinking water on their own when that time comes, i'm very concerned about hydration, and I've got them on formula, solid food, and electrolyte solution for when their skin shows they need hydration. In a few days I will feel comfortable letting them rely mostly on the solid food in formula they like, but i'm worried about keeping them hydrated. Any thoughts?
thank you so much,
Elise

Answer
Dear Elise,

The secret is to introduce a new method of drinking by showing them how to take it but not taking away the last method yet.  For instance, to acquaint them with water in a dish, use a tiny dish so they can't drown; show it to them several times a day (put a drop of water on their mouth next to it) and only hydrate them yourself once or twice a day, then giving them as much as they want.  Going from dish to bottle is the same idea.  Show them the bottle several times a day and only have the dish available maybe 4 hours a day. This way they have motivation to learn but don't thirst.

Have fun!
