Hello, Natashsa, I am an expert on the site, too. But, now, I need some help. My daughter has a small mouse named Spice (Sugar passed about 6 mts ago). This morning, she noticed what appears to be either some sort of abscess OR an open wound from scratching on the back of his neck area. She is very upset. Spice is about 2.5 yrs old, so he's a senior, I assume. I'll attach pictures of the poor fellow.

At first I had assumed it was an abscess or infection. HOWEVER, we are currently treating our dog & cat for fleas, so then I thought that maybe he had fleas and just caused the injury by scratching a lot(?). As I was taking the pictures, i DID notice him scratching near the wound. Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for your time...

Answer
Hi fellow expert : ))

An abscess would be a lump that opened up. If this was never a lump, it is just a horrible wound. If it was only a small wound, I would just tell you to give the mouse a drop of the Revolution that you have for the other animals. But with how that looks, I really think it also needs antibiotics. The mouse needs to go to the vet. Whether it is mites or not, the mouse needs antibiotics anyway. I would pressure the vet to treat for mites at the same time, since there is no harm in it. Your goal is immediate relief for the mouse, not to figure out why this happened. I say this because it is easy to lose track of this.

I wish the little guy the best of luck and health. It looks very painful and he needs relief as immediately as possible.

Squeaks,
