Inury to teeth

Question
One of our guinea pigs fell and hit his mouth and now his top two teeth are loose.  They don't look broken.  Will they tighten back up and if he happens to loose them will they grow back.  Buster is 1 1/2 years old.

Answer
Hi Jan,

For now I would just keep a close eye on Buster. If they are loose then there is really only two things that can happen - they fall out or they tighten up. It is more likely they will fall out though.

If they fall out, you should go to your vet for further advice. There will be concerns about the opposing teeth overgrowing and then causing problems, so the vet may like to trim his lower incisors slightly each week to prevent overgrowth while the other teeth grow back.

If they begin to tighten up then just continue to watch him closely, make sure he can still eat and drink okay. If they don't tighten up within a few days then contact your vet.

The main concern is how well he manages to eat and the continuous growth of the opposing teeth, so while those teeth are loose there is a chance that he won't manage to eat quite as well and he won't manage to wear the opposing teeth down properly.

Best Wishes,
