My daughters guinea pigs

Question
Hi, I have just purchased my daughters first guinea pig, she is only 5 but loves him to death! I have a few questions that may sound a bit stupid but really need them answering. He is a gorgeous piggy and very friendly as she won't put him down and loves cuddling and stroking him, is this ok? Do they like to have loads of handling? Also, I have read that you can take them for walks? Is this right, he is kept in a cage in the home so it does sound like a good idea, but I am not sure. I have seen shops sell collars and leads for guinea pigs.
Thank you very much for reading my questions I really appreciate you taking your time.

Answer
Hi Louise.  Don't worry, no question is too silly to ask!
Guinea pigs absolutely love attention so it's great that your daughter is spending so much time with him.  A guinea pig comfortable in his surroundings and used to his owners loves nothing less than a snuggly cuddle on a warm lap!   It's also worth remembering that guinea pigs are naturally social animals that live best in groups, so human interaction is the next best thing for a lone pig.
A word on walking guinea pigs, i don't really recommend it.  I know you can get those leads but they're really not ergonomically designed well for a guinea pig's body.  That, and no guinea pig likes to be dictated as to where he can go!  There are large balls like hamster balls you should definitely avoid too.  The best thing you can for Mr piggy is get him a pen for playing in out of his cage.  You can get indoor pens as well as outdoor runs, both are an excellent source for providing run-about space.  Providing jingly and gnawing toys will encourage him to move about and play.  I hope this helps you - any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!
