Question
Hi my name is Jessica and I just got a baby girl guinea pig.  I was told she was from a pet store in the mall.  She eats fine, drinks fine, loves treats, and talks alot, but she has been shaking her head alot lately. I also noticed she has a small spot on her ear not a bug, not dark, and healthy looking and not touchy but I was wondering if you might know what is up? I will probably take her to a vet but I am afraid to scare her, because I just got her and she is just getting used to me. WHAT DO I DO????? Thanks a bunch,
Jessie WY

Answer
Hi Jessica.  I think your pig may have ear mites there, which you'll only be able to treat using prescription only medication from a vet.  The most typical symptom is the shaking of the head, of both ears.  The spot you can see could be a sore/scab from scratching the ear, which is a common trait for ear mites.
I'm afraid you will need to take her to the vet, but your guinea will thank you for it and will be able to enjoy and appreciate you more when she is comfortable and well in herself.
I hope this helps you.
