Question
our guinea pig won't eat or drink. we've been syringe feeding it for the past 2 days. the exotic pet vet filled it's teeth, xrayed it to see if it's jaw is aligned, it has no tumors or growths. he tries to eat but he can't open his jaw wide enough.  we've never feed it anything with seeds in it, and now he is starting to smell bad. he's never smelled before.

Answer
Are you saying the smell is coming from his mouth or from his body? I'm wondering if he has some kind of abscess that could causing the odor. However I would think the vet would have seen that. An odor that's that noticable sounds like decaying tissue. The question of course is where and why.

If the vet has xrayed his jaw he would have seen any kind of malocclusion that could be keeping him from opening his mouth. That would leave me thinking that his is something systemic rather than dental. You don't say how old he is. If he is over four this may be an aging issue and he may be slowing leaving you.

I know that's not good news and certainly not what you want to hear. It sounds as though you've done a great deal to try to find the problem, and I'm sure you've spent a considerable sum of money as well. Sadly this may be something you cannot fix. As hard as it is to think about you might have to consider whether you're really doing the right thing to keep putting him through this. I'm so sorry I don't have a positive answer for you.
