Answer
Hi Beverly,

It's very important to not touch any of the babies until they are 14 days old.  Once they are 14 days old, then you can hold them for short periods of times.  You can also go ahead and clean out the cage.

When the babies are around the age of 14-16 days, that's when their eyes will open.

And, you can give the mother small amounts of carrots, milk, and boiled eggs.  You can also give her a plain dog bone for calcium.  (The dog bone is also good for filing down hamsters' teeth.)

When the babies are around a week old, you can begin scattering some hamster mix around the cage.  That way, the babies can begin experimenting with solid food.  Also, be sure to go ahead and lower the water bottle now so the babies can reach it.

When the babies are 3 weeks old, they are fully weaned and ready to leave the mother.  Put the male babies in one cage, and the female babies in another cage.  When the babies are 6 weeks old, they are ready to go to new homes.  With Dwarf hamsters, you should give them away in same-sex pairs, since Dwarves are social and appreciate the company of another.  If they are Syrian hamsters (also known as "Golden," "Black Bear," or "Teddy Bear" hamsters), once they reach the age of 6 weeks, they should be by themselves (one hamsters per cage).

Merry Christmas!
