Is he/she pregnant?

Question
Hi there.  I got a syrian hamster about a week and a half ago.  When I got my hamster the man who sold him to me said that he was pretty sure it is a guy. So, my hamster has been becoming very comfortable now around in its new enviroment, but, I don't know if it is a boy for sure.  I named him Benny and ever since today and last night he(or she) has become very akward.  He usually nibbles on my hand or on my finger when i try to rub his belly, but all he does now is scratch a little bit. His home has two floors: a bottom with his food bowl, water supply, and wheel is, and a top floor: which leads up to his bubble he climbs through and a petting zone.  I'm starting to become concerned because now thats the only place he spends his time at.  He hasn't brought any food up there yet, but he usually stays in only one spot. Is this normal? Also since today I'm starting to notice that he is getting fat.  I don't know if this is just normal because he is almost about 5 weeks old, or the fact that this is really a girl.  Please let me know what I can do to figure this out.
Thanks.
Michelle

Answer
Hi Michelle,

Since you have a Syrian hamster, it'll be pretty easy to tell if it's a boy.  Male Syrians have prominent testicles below the tail.  If you don't see any testicles, then you know your hamster is a female.

Also, if you have a female Syrian, it's possible that she is pregnant.  Syrians stay pregnant for about 16 days, so if she's pregnant, she'll be due soon.  Has she gained weight around her middle?  Also, has she made a large nest and hoarded food in it?  Those are signs the hamster is pregnant.

Regarding your hamster's behavior - it's normal for a hamster to make its nest in one spot and sleep there during the day.  However, if your hamster is not active at night, then he/she may be ill, and should be taken to the vet.  (Lethargy is a sign of several different illnesses.)

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask :)
