how do you keep hamsters alive and well over there life expectancy

Proper care, and lots of enrichment. Keep the hamster busy-- give it hard nuts, put its food in a toilet paper roll and plug up the ends with hay, give it things to knaw-- the possibilities are almost endless. Also, I don't breed my hamsters, and I think that adds a few months to their life.
