Question
Hi there,
I brought my hamster just over a week ago and he was very scared, but once he got to know me he only bit me once a night then he stopped and was so much fun. However, last night (Wednesday) it was fairly loud in my house, but i kept my door closed so no-one went in apart from me and he was so jumpy and scared of me. Therefore I tried playing with him in the cage, but he kept jumping for no reason. Then tonight I let him go in his ball then got him out and held him for only a minute because my room isn't very hamster proof and he was getting jumpy and very quick so I had to put him back in the cage.

I feel that all my hard work has been wasted because he is so jumpy with me. Also he keeps going to the toilet alot on his wheel which he hasn't done before.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Answer
Never wake up a hamster. This will make them defensive, and he may bite you.

Always wash your hands before you handle your hamster. If they smell food, they will try to nibble your fingers to see if you taste good. =]

Talk in a soft voice. Their little hamster ears can't handle loud noises.

Move slowly, moving fast will startle him.
