Crittertrail condensation?

Question
Hello! I have a long haired hamster. I believe he is a Teddy bear
hamster? He had the crittertrail 2 story cage. He sleeps in the petting
zone, and every night when I go in to check on him, there is a lot of
condensation on the lid. When I pick him up, he is moist like he had just
cleaned himself. I'm worried that this condensation is harmful. He's not
near a window or a source of heat or cooling, and he's in a room by
himself. What can I do/ what is the cause?

Answer
Dear Kara,
thank you for your question.
Crittertrail cages are not suitable for any rodent and way too small for Syrian hamsters. The condensation happens because all the plastic and tubes make the cage very badly ventilated and it can indeed be dangerous, it may cause mold and the hamster may get a respiratory infection.
I would highly recommend getting or building another cage. Tanks can be turned into great hamster homes, the minimum size for a Syrian hamster would be a 40g (as long as it wider than high to ensure good ventilation) or a cage that's 100x50x50cm long, wide and high. Hamsters really need that much room to run and dig.
