Ziggy, my gerbil

Question
My gerbil Ziggy has a toe on his hind right foot that is kind of swollen and purple-ish. His nail on that toe is white and crooked, but he runs around just fine. He doesn't seem to notice, i think its just a break but because of the discoloration i want to be sure. Could it be anything else?

Answer
Hi Teddy

Sorry to hear that your gerbil has hurt his toe.  It could well be a break or a crush injury.  Most times fractures heal on their own providing the animal doesn't aggravate it, however, there are some instances when vets need to intervene.  If the circulation has been compromised the limb may need amputation.  Since he doesn't seem too bothered by it right now I would be tempted just to monitor him over the next week.  If it bothers him he may decide to amputate it himself (chew it off) which is pretty awful.  I would suggest that if there is no improvement in a few days, if it gets worse, if the discolouration spreads to any other part of his foot/leg, or if the swelling gets worse then definitely get him to a vet.

It would be worth checking that he hasn't cut/punctured the foot and it has infected.  See if there are any signs of puncture wounds and if there is any pus.  Sometimes toys/houses etc. have sharp edges and it could be that he has hurt himself.  In cases of infection it is important to see a vet as they would need to prescribe antibiotics.

Good luck with this.

Sheila
