Male Yorkie fixed 1 yr old

Question
I have a year old Yorkie male and a 15 year old female Yorkie.  The male is constantly barking at the older female and will not let her walk anywhere in the house without picking on her.  When I pick up the female, the male tries to bite her, does not want me to get near her and bites at my heels.  When both dogs are outside, the male just walks along with the female and does not bother her.  I believe the male does not want the older female anywhere near me.  When I tell the male "no", he barks at me.  Frankly, he does not mind at all.

Answer
Hello Fran,   It sounds like you have a very jealous little boy on your hands who doesn't want to share his Mommy.

I would try to help the male learn that the female is the top dog.  Several ways to do this is to:  1) when you feed the dogs, always feed her first.    2) When going in or out of the door, make sure the female goes first.

I would also enroll the male into an obedience class to help him learn basics like sit and stay.  It sounds like he wants to be the boss of even you and I think some obedience training will help resolve this.

I don't know if you ever keep either of them crated, but a comfortable open wire crate (not the plastic airline carrier), can be a good tool in training.  You could keep the male crated some until he learns to get along.
