Question
good afternoon, i hope that u can advise meon a query that i have about my 12 year old staffordshire bull terrier, i have been feeding him ever since i got him at the age of 2 half a tin of dog food and sum complete dog biscuits, now he is getting old, what is the best diet to feed him

Answer
There are senior foods in most brands for older dogs. Select one that has a formula similar to what the dog eats now. There are also breed specific formulas. Also check with your vet to see what the correct amount of food per day is.  Older dogs need less calories and usually less fat and filler content. 12 is old for a Staffie, but their big wide grin makes you want to hug them all the time, so when you do, check to see how much body fat there is on his ribs. You should clearly feel the bones, but the bones should not be visible.  Some vets will view the belly line, others overall body fat to determine if the dog is getting enough or too much food. The correct amount depends on the current weight and activity level. Dog food here comes in several sizes of cans, so I'm not sure about your half tin measurement.
