Question
Hi I have a very sweet pit bull/boxer mix thats very affectionate and loves attention. I've had her since she was little puppy, but she licks everything especially my family. She licks walls, the floors, anything within contact. I know its her form of affection but how can I get her to stop?

Answer
If she was just licking people, I might think it was "affection" or possibly puppy-like subserviant behavior. But if she is licking floors and walls, I might consider that this could be a compulsive disorder. My first choice would be some solid training, a good schedule, consistent rules. If it is anxiety driven, reducing the inconsistencies in her life can reduce general anxiety. If she knows some behaviors, tricks and games, you can interrupt the licking as soon as it starts and give her something else to think about. If you can interrupt it immediately, you may be able to change the habit if it's not too severe. If the behavior continues and is disruptive to her life, you might want to talk to your vet about either referring you to a veterinary behaviorist, or the vet consulting with one on medications that can help with compulsive disorders.
