dog wetting

Question
We have an 8 month old mix(I believe he's pointer/lab). He was potty trained from day one and has never been a problem with that. He's extremely smart and easy to train. However, he has a tendency to pee when someone walks in the door. I stopped petting him right away when I came home from work at night and that worked great, but he still pees when someone new comes over. We have to put him out the back door when someone knocks and leave him outside while company is over. Every time they touch him he shoots a shot of urine straight forward. It's very embarrassing and I don't know how to stop him. He's a beautiful, adorable dog and people automatically go to pet him, which he loves. How can we train him to stop peeing on company?

Dear Anna,

The above website will help you understand why he is doing what he is doing. My space on this forum is limited and I would be giving you the same advice. Most dogs out grow submissive urination just remember to redirect his focus when you have guests and don't make a big deal out of it. Is he in any kind of group obedience training? If not, please take him. This will show him its ok to be submissive but will redirect his focus on commands to please you. If he is, redirect... ask him to sit reward with something yummy, or teach him to do a trick when someone comes in the door to take his mind off of guests, always remember to reward.
Let me know what you think about the article and if you have any questions feel free to ask I will be happy to help.
