Question
Hi,well i wanted 2 know what will happen if my dog gets pregnant at a young age.The guy that lives next to us has a dog and he said that his dog got mixed with my dog last week. Her vagina is swollen and it looks like its bleeding. What can i do to know if she is pregnant or not.I didn't want her to be pregnant yet and especially not by that dog but if she is oh well as long as nothing happens to her

Answer
Hi Kevin,  You can get a shot within 3 days of the breeding to prevent her from getting pregnant.  Otherwise, there is really nothing else you can do.  a dog's heat cycle breaks done into 3 segments basically. A dog's heat cycle breaks down in the following manner:  The  1st 7-10 days, they tend to bleed heavier and will not accept a male, the 2nd 7-10 day segment their vulva will swell and they will be willing to accept a male.  The last segment also will last approx. 7-10 days and they will be going out of heat and not accept a male.  If she is still swollen, then odds are she is pregnant and there is nothing you can do.  Keep her on puppy food, and extra calicium supplements so you don't have to worry about her getting eclampsia, which can kill her very quickly.  Hope this helps,

Dawn
