maltese nail biting

Question
The vet and I have checked and there is no redness and they are not swollen. Do you recommend anything to wrap her feet with. I tried newborn socks and kept them up with a hair tie but all she does is pull them off. Thanks for your advice.

-----Question-----
I have a 1 year old maltese and she has been biting at her nails for the last 3-4 months. I took her to the vet and they put her on allergy free food (hills ZD)and nothing changed. I took her back and they said it is just a habit like humans have. It is driving me nuts and I am afraid that there is something really wrong. We tell her No and we have tried Apple bitters and she just licks it off. She will even stop playing to bite at them. We have tried everything. Do you have any suggestions?
thanks so much

Hello Mindy, it does sound as if she has started a habit.  With all the licking and biting she has probably created a fungus or bacteria in that area and if so that is what is keeping her licking and biting that area.  Check her feet especially around the nail area and see if that area is red and maybe a little swollen.  If so then she does have a fungus.  Start treating the fungus with a topical antibiotic cream and once gone she may stop biting the area.  This wont be easy, as soon as you apply the cream she will want to lick it off.  Hold her at least 5 min. to 10 min. to let the creme work.  If you have to wrap the paws so that she can't lick it off.  This would be my suggestion if you find a fungus.  If not, then still try wrapping the feet so she can't get at the nails and maybe in time she will stop the habit once she can't get at them long enough.  Good luck, Cindy Lou :)

Answer
Hello Mindy, Yes there is something that you can get from the vet or online at drsfosterandsmith.com  that is called vet wrap, you may recognize it as what your vet wraps around your dogs leg after drawing blood.  It won't stick to the fur and will not come off easily.  Thanks, Cindy Lou :)
