Question
my friend pet staffers bull terrier which is 3 years old has taken to chasing its tail ,sometimes catches it and chews it a little.the area which it chews looks raw we would like some advice on how to prevent this and what are the causes for this behavior

Answer
Hi Danny;
I would think it is either compulsive behavior, which is like compulsive behavior in humans. Tranquilizers or anti-depressants are usually prescribed by Veterinarians, and I think animal massage along with the meds until the massages have time to relax the dog and ease any fears that are causing this.
Go to   www.lindatellington-jones.com
to read about what can be accomplished with the massages, and you can order a video from there to learn how to do the massages.
The other couse could be allergies.
Due to the chewing until the area is raw.
Does the dog chew it's ffet are any other area?
Allergies are quite common with dogs. We have messed with our enviornment until humans and animals have more allergies than are allergy free.
Either situation will require a Vterinarian's exam, possibly tests, and diagnosis, then prescribed treatments.
With either situation, if not treated, it wil only get worse.
