Question
I have a male toy poodle that barks and runs to the tv everytime he sees an animal or even hears a certain commercial that has animals in it.  How can he tell that it is an animal that is on tv?

Answer
Hi Tara,

It's not that strange. A lot of dogs do that. Couple the noise/sight of an animal with some negative reinforcement and you have a dog who barks at every animal on TV.

My Malinois used to wake up from a dead seep when she heard an animal on TV. Even turtles!! Noise is the primary motivator.

What I taught her to do was "walk it off" in other words leave if you are going to act a fool. Over time she decided that staying with the party rather than being banished was better and she has learned to control herself.

You could also try isolating a single activity that floods him with joy like where's the ball as soon as he starts to react to the TV. Over time, he will start to look for the ball. In other words, change the stimulus response.
