Question
Hi, I need some advice from a person who understands shelter dogs!
I have had a 5 month old lab mix from the shelter for a week now. he is very sweet but...He has a few problems, doesn't listen well, ignores me when outside, chews everything when I'm at work, and doesn't let you know when he need to go outside to pee or poo.  I just walk him every few hours and he will go outside, but if I leave it up to him to tell me, he pees inside.  I understand there were to be some problems but I'm wondering if you can tell me what may be going on in general as he's lived in and out of shelters and foster homes his whole life. I've always had cats so dog behavior is a bit of a mystery to me.   Thanks!

Answer
I think crating will be the best way to go

Crates work because dogs will not want to spoil areas they want to sleep-and how they work is that you put them in there when you are not home, and let them out as soon as you return

For puppies and for new dogs, you crate them pretty much all day, except when you have to let them out,and to feed them and then after a few weeks of that, they can be let out more often,at first only in a small area

And as for the other problems,I think now is the time to take him to obedience school he is now old enough to pay attention, but young enough to learn
