Dogs penis discharge

Question
Recently my dog has been licking his penis a lot lately.  He has had a milky discharge around the end of it.  Is it infected with something?  I am finding little puddles of white clear milky discharge on the floor also.

Is this the equilvalent of dog adolescense?  Like getting your first wet dream?

Let me know what you think...

Answer
This very well could simply be semen dripping from the penis and would have a milky appearance. Commonly this occurs in intact males (not neutered)that smells a female that is in heat. Also on the note of infection the prepuce (area around the penis covered in hair) forms a sheath that houses the penis and foreign material can get trapped in this sheath and cause irritation along with infection. Reddness usually will be observed  just inside the opening of the prepuce if any infection or abrasions are present. Also some dogs suffering from obessive compulsive disorder will constantly lick areas of their body, such as a paw or their penis. This is a behavorail problem that can be corrected with medications; however, the licking could be do to irritation since dogs salvia has enzymes and other substances that help fight infection it is natural for them to lick areas of their body that are injured or infected. If the problem continues you may want to have your veterinarian examine your dog to see if any irritation or infection is present. Most likely, especially if the dog is young and not neutered, it is simply that the dog is experiencing arousal and is ejaculating. If this is the case it should occur periodically and improve over time. If there is a constant dripping or constant milky appearance around the prepuce you should have your veterinarian see the dog as soon as possible because it is likely due to infection and a proper cleaning and antibiotics may be needed.
