Question
I will be getting a male black lab very shortly. Right now he is six months old but I was wondering when I need to get him neutered and when vaccines to get him and when.

Answer
Hello and thank you for your questions,

He is ready to be Neutered now as he is sexually mature or will be within a few short weeks and will roam(try get out of the yard) or try run away during off leash times at dog parks in search of a female in heat, Will also mount thing much more then a neutered male at this age and may try challage domance...be boss of you, Best to get him neutered within his first month with you. Be sure to take him in for his vaccines as soon as you bring him home which will include a check-up. If he doens't have any vaccines at all its very inportant to get him in to the vets the day or the second day after you bring him home as there are too many illnesses that he can come in contact with just going for a walk that can make him deadly ill. You will want Distemper/Parvo vaccine and a rabies vaccine, The distemper/parvo vaccine is a combo with something else I beleave, if he hasnt had any yet he will be needing to go back once or twice more to complete the puppy set he missed(you forgot to mention if he had vaccines already). The rabies vaccine can be given along with the distemper/parvo vaccine and should be given right away also...in the vent he ever gets bitten by a rabit animal like araccon/cat stray dog ect he might be able to be saved...also if he doesnt have it and bites someone perpose or accident and makes them bleed(a real bite0 you can get sued and the dog taken away and Killed for rabies testing..with a vaccine to prove his inacence he may be spared in a lawsuit. There are other vaccines like one for something simler to beaver fever if the dog will be going into lakes/sstreams/poands he should haev this vaccine to pervent 'beaver feaver'...its not called that but I can't rember its name as my dogs have never needed it. Kennle cough or canine cough is required if he will be spending time in a boarding kennel or doggy daycare at any given time. I hope this helps if you need any more information feel free to ask, and Enjoy your new puppy.
