when in heat

i have a 1 1/2 old mix rotewiller with terrior. we are going to get her fix . my question is how do i know if she is in heat. for the last to day she is acting funny she gathers her toys up and then circles them and then lay on them and she has starting whining at any little thing. we go to the vet on thursday for her shots will ask vet them. thought some might be able to help till then

Hello...female dogs in heat act srange rolling over on the carpet for nothing...buddying up to other household dogs/cats and people....watch her carefully at this time you wouldnt want her to get pregnant. also take a tissue and wipe it across her vulva if ther eis any discharge at all then she is indeed in heat.
