dog aggression to puppy

Question
Hello, our 21 month old lab (dog) has recently been introduced to our 4 month old lab (puppy).  we introduced them on neutral territory and our older one bite our younger one - which we expected as the puppy smell was all over me and our dog had not had to share me before.  but as time has gone on our dog has bitten our puppy on numerous occasions when food has been around so we have eliminated having them around when we have our food.  but today our dog has bitten our puppy three times - once when i was washing my face in the bathroom, then again when i was washing my hands after i had had my lunch and just let them in, and again when my partner was heating his dinner and returned to the lounge where our dog bit our puppy.  i understand that this is all stemming from sorting out who is boss but our puppy is a very submissive boy and our dog has always been a fun dog - has this been too stressful for our dog? i hope you can advise us on what to do as it is really upsetting for me to see my boys unhappy.  as far as disciplining goes we are pinning our dog down using skin from around the neck much like the mother would do to her pups but feel that we need to check we are doing it correctly and that there are no other methods we could try as we want to correct this behaviour not minimise it.  thanks jen

Answer
Your problem lies in incorrect pack order in your home. You need to establish pack order with you and your husband as pack leaders. Your dog believes him to be in control of your house and you. DO NOT use an alpha pin or roll, that is not productive and can be very dangerous when used by people who are really inexperienced in dog handling and training. Use a sharp short poke in the neck/collar area of your older dog using your cupped hand with fingers extended and a sharp CHHH sound combined with NO. Use your body to step toward your dog when you do this. Use an upright , shoulders back, confident body position with total eye contact. Force him to back up several steps.
That's just a bandaid. You need to address the entire situation in your home. Type alpha dog boot camp into your webbrowser. This site is wonderful and will tell you exactly how to establish and maintain pack order so that you have calm, peaceful dogs. Your older dog will be a much happier dog. ALso excersiz and walking is ESSENTIAL to establish pack order. walk your dog forty five minutes every day ., POWER walk him at heel. People are always amazed at how well this helps change a dogs attitude. Do remember a tired dog is a calm dog.
Good luck
