Law Student wants a dog

Question
Hi!  I am a law student and live in an apartment.  I really want to get a dog but I'm not exactly sure what kind.  I saw a movie that had a Pug mix puppy and it was really cute.  I also really like Lhasas and Shitzus.  I was wondering if you could tell me what type of small dog does best being left at home during the day.  Most days I will have to be at school from 9-5, but would often be able to come home for lunch.  I really need something that doesn't shed a lot or is hypoallergenic as well because I'm allergic to some dogs.  (I used to have a Collie growing up and was not allergic to her).  Can you give me any advice or suggest a type of dog.  I am interested in adopting a dog from a shelter or getting a dog for a cheaper price since I living on a law student's budget but I also want one that will not tear up my apartment.  I would appreciate any advice or tips!  Thanks!

Answer
Poodles and schnauzers are generally good for allergies and they shed minimally. Any dog left home alone all day may decide to start tearing up your home due to boredom. Intelligent breeds can get very inventive! It should be confined in a crate, an exercise pen, or a small room when you are gone. And always leave a radio on to help drown out outside noises since you live in an apartment.

You might try going to a dog show in your area to investigate some of the breeds to see what might work for you. http://www.akc.org/dic/events/search/index.cfm
