chocolate labs

I'm searching for a chocolate lab puppy for the spring of 08.My friend has a choc. lab who I'm in love with.He looks like a cross between an english and american bred lab.He is on the larger size, muscular yet lean with a big blocky head.His coat seems sleeker than an english bred and it is a very dark coat.His tail is not quit otter like.What should I look for and ask a breeder when finding a puppy of similar characteristics?

I can't give a good answer to your question.  I am going to direct you to a web site put up by a Lab breeder.  I have found the site a treasure trove of dog info, far more reliable  than many of the sites put up on the net by kooks with an agenda.  http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/articles.html

I have not read everything linked to on the site.  Frankly I disagree with some of the stuff I have read, but still think it is a valuable resource.
