Question
HELLO. I HAVE 2 LAB'S. THEY JUST TURNED A YEAR IN DECEMBER AND THEY ARE BROTHER AND SISTER. MY QUESTION IS.... MY FEMALE LAB KILLED AND ATE A RABBIT THE OTHER DAY AND I WANT TO KNOW SINCE SHE HAS THE TASTE OF BLOOD IF I HAVE TO BE WORRIED ABOUT THE KIDS THAT I HAVE AT HOME. NOW AS SOON AS I SAW WHAT SHE WAS DOING THE RABBIT WAS TAKEN AWAY AND SHE WAS GIVEN A BATH. IS THIS EVEN NORMAL FOR LAB'S TO DO THIS? PLEASE HELP.... THANK YOU....

Answer
I don't think it should be a problem.  The little mix, that we had when our kids were little, killed many rabbits, but never hurt the kids.  You need to make sure the dogs are getting good leadership.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/  For more on being top dog, see http://www.dogbreedinfo.com./topdogrules.htm  dig into that site and it has more about children and dogs.  The dogs must understand the children are higher status than they are.
