Mometamax and hearing loss

Question
My 10 y.o. boston terrier was on mometamax 9 days, the first 4 with a double dose that was a mistake.  She has lost almost all her hearing.  We stopped the med 2 days ago and some hearing is returning but not much.  We flushed her ears out yesterday - my question is:  Should I have my vet sedate her so the vet can clean her ear drum and canal, will that help with cleaning out the toxicity?  I've heard predinsone may reduce swelling as well.

Answer
Hi Doug,

As far as I know, it's usually temporary when dogs lose hearing from Mometamax. Affected dogs should get their hearing back in a week or two. Your vet is the real expert here, you should be having this discussion with him or her.

Mometamax is a topical medication in the corticosteroid class of medications, the same class Prednisone is in, only Prednisone is given orally. It works to treat other conditions by reducing swelling and redness and by changing the way the immune system works. As to whether or not it could help your dog, that's another question to take up with your vet.

Best of luck,
Patti
