Question

Miss Lacey Ann
Hi Patti,
I read your question about your Jack Russell with the anal gland issue.  I have a jack Russell (2 year old) that has the same issue.  The right side has ruptured twice, and today the left side ruptured.  We found that at least it heals well with antibiotic treatment and they gave me a blue med I add to warm water and cleanse the area twice daily until healed.  I wanted to know if it has helped for you to add the pumpkin?  If so, how much and do you do this daily?  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Terri,

I don't know which past response of mine you're responding to, I get a fair amount of messages, and have been answering questions for several years.

If your dog has had recurring episodes of of his Anal Glands rupturing, your vet might recommend surgical removal of the anal glands to prevent repeated relapse, at this point.
If the glands just ruptured again, your dog to repeat the antibiotic treatment again, so please have him examined by your vet.

Adding pumpkin can help some dogs, but in a dog that has repeated episodes of anal sacs rupturing, it may not make a dent in your dog's condition.  If you want to try using some, start with just a little, (half-teaspoon) as too much fiber can cause diarrhea. If your dog tolerates the 1/2 teaspoon, you can try increasing that to a full teaspoon mixed into his regular food.

It's believed that dog anal gland problems can be linked to the quality of pet food a dog receives. Inexpensive brands of dog food use a lot of cereal fillers, which tend to make soft stools. The soft stool isn't able to press firmly enough against the dog's anal glands to provide the necessary pressure to express them, and there the trouble begins. Higher quality dog foods that produce a firmer, more compact stool actually aid the expressing of dog anal glands and, therefore, may be a better food choice for your dog. If you plan on changing your dog's diet, so it gradually, over a period of 5-7 days.

Best of luck,

Patti
